What is Mountain Time?

Mountain Time (MT) covers the Rocky Mountain states, from Montana down through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. It runs on Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTC−7) from November to March and Mountain Daylight Time (MDT, UTC−6) the rest of the year — with one big exception: most of Arizona keeps MST all year and never changes clocks.

Because Arizona skips daylight saving, Phoenix matches Denver in winter but matches Los Angeles in summer. The Navajo Nation, which extends into Arizona, does observe DST, while the Hopi Reservation inside it does not. Denver is the zone's largest city and the reference for the IANA zone name America/Denver.

Frequently asked questions

Is it MST or MDT right now?

The live status is shown under the clock above. MST (UTC−7) applies from the first Sunday of November to the second Sunday of March; MDT (UTC−6) the rest of the year — except in most of Arizona, which stays on MST all year.

Does Arizona use Mountain Time?

Yes, but most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) all year, so in summer Phoenix clocks match Pacific Time. The Navajo Nation within Arizona does observe DST.

What is the difference between Mountain and Pacific Time?

Mountain is 1 hour ahead of Pacific all year — noon Mountain is 11:00 AM Pacific. See the MST to PST chart.
